I’m a middle child, born and raised in that in-between space. The “middle” has always been my point of view—my natural lens on life. And you know what? The more I look around, the more I believe that most things in life really are better somewhere in the middle.
Let’s break it down—from simple to more complex:
Weight
Extreme ends of the scale aren’t ideal. Being severely underweight can be just as unhealthy as being severely overweight. Balance—somewhere in the middle—is where strength, energy, and health tend to thrive.
Beauty Fads
Have you seen the fingernail trend lately? Some nails are over four inches long. (They’ve actually swabbed under those things and found all kinds of bacteria—ew.) I honestly don’t know how someone washes their hands properly, let alone takes care of other basic hygiene with claws like that.
On the flip side, I’ve seen people chew their nails down to the point of bleeding. That’s not healthy either.
And don’t even get me started on the other beauty fads:
-
- Eyelashes so long they create a wind tunnel when you blink
-
- Eyebrows thick enough to host a family of caterpillars
-
- Makeup layered on like spackle
-
- Cologne that hits you like pepper spray
-
- Implants that look like they belong in a superhero comic
Don’t get me wrong—enhancements can be fun and fabulous. But sometimes, less really is more. Or at least… somewhere in the middle.
Rules
Rules are essential. They create structure, safety, and fairness. Without rules, there’s chaos. But too many rules? That’s suffocating. The sweet spot is somewhere between anarchy and authoritarianism.
Money
Yes, we need money—enough to eat, live, and not worry constantly. Struggling to get by is exhausting and unfair. But too much money? That can be its own trap.
Some people who inherit or come into wealth without effort lose the motivation to work or grow. Others become consumed by greed, developing a superiority complex, forgetting their humility, and looking down on those with less.
In my opinion, financial peace of mind lives somewhere in the middle—comfortable, but not excessive.
Politics
Ah yes, I’m going there.
There’s red.
There’s blue.
But what about purple?
What about balance, compromise, and common sense? Somewhere in the middle, we might just find solutions instead of shouting matches.
Goldilocks Had It Right
Remember The Three Bears? One chair was too hard. One was too soft. But Baby Bear’s chair? Just right. Life works that way too. Whether it’s porridge, politics, or personal choices, there’s a lot of power in finding that middle ground.
Honestly, I could keep going. So many parts of life function best when they’re not at the extreme ends. Maybe that’s the gift of being a “middle” child—I learned early that the magic often happens in the in-between.
Not too much. Not too little.
Just right.
Right there…
In the middle.
